I recently lost my mother from a heart attack brought on by complications from her Alzheimer's condition. My two sisters and I have worked hard over the past six years to keep her in her home in spite of the disease. Mother had lived alone since our dad past away in 1974. She was very independent and quite comfortable living alone for all those years. Our family was always very close and as a result some of us were always visiting her. We always celebrated holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions there. She never had much chance to get too lonely because of our constant visits and phone calls.
When mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's over six years ago, we decided that the number one goal must be to try to do everything we could to keep her in her home as long as we possibly could. We knew that when she had to leave her home then her zest for life or desire to live for the future would no longer exist. She was 86 years old and we feared her health would begin to tumble much more quickly if she were suddenly living in unfamiliar surroundings. During these six long years, we had to overcome many hurdles that were inevitable with an Alzheimer's patient. There were many aspects of mother's life that had to change and we had to discretely make the changes happen. We learned a great deal about how to care for someone with Alzheimer's and how to prolong keeping them in their home.
It is because of all that we learned, including the fact that there are so many people going through the same thing that haven't had the opportunity to learn many of these things yet, that I decided to put all that we had learned in a book. The book is entitled "Living Alone With Dementia/Alzheimer's" (How To Keep Your Loved One In Their Home As Long As Possible). It is being published by Publish America and should be available in a few months.
If anyone would like to receive a notice when the book becomes available simply send me an email with your request. My email address is oldhouse@charter.net
